Joint media release:
- The Hon Michael McCormack, Shadow Minister for International Development and the Pacific
Today’s announcement of a new security agreement between Australia and Nauru is a potentially important step in the ongoing effort to ensure stability and security in the Pacific.
While we welcome any measures to secure a free, open, and peaceful Pacific region, the Coalition will carefully consider all details of the agreement between our two nations.
Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Birmingham said that agreements like this build on the Coalition’s proud history of strengthening Australia’s relations with Nauru and our other Pacific neighbours.
“Contestability in the Pacific region continues to intensify, making the Coalition’s expansion of Australia’s diplomatic presence and increase in infrastructure investments ever more important,” Senator Birmingham said.
“While this Labor Government has promised much in the Pacific, their announced agreements have not always been fully concluded, ratified, and implemented.”
“It is up to the Prime Minister to ensure this deal has the support that is required to make a smooth transition towards ratification and implementation.”
Shadow Minster for International Development and the Pacific, Michael McCormack echoed the importance of upholding Australia’s engagement with our Pacific neighbours.
“While the Coalition supports initiatives that promote peace and security, it is essential that all details of these agreements be carefully considered, including a thorough examination through the established processes, such as the Joint Standing Committee on Treaties, to ensure full accountability and transparency,” Mr McCormack said.
“The Pacific is simply too important a strategic partner for us to risk. Past experiences, including missteps or delays in agreements with other Pacific nations like Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea, cannot be repeated.”
The Coalition continues to offer bipartisan support for responsible and transparent initiatives that enhance Australia’s relationship with our Pacific family. We look forward to engaging further with the government to ensure Australia’s interests are protected, and that this agreement contributes to a more secure and prosperous Pacific region for all.
